Tech Support: How to Use iChat for Mac OS X
How to Use Ichat
Ichat is the default chatting program for Macintosh computers. You can use Ichat to video chat over the Internet but if you don't have a webcam you can still use text chat or audio chat. Since Apple makes computers for home users as well as professionals, Ichat aims to create an interface that can be used easily by beginners but also incorporate advanced features for business communication. (Note: In recent versions of MAC OS ichat has been transformed as iMessage app for messages and Facetime for video calls)
Use the Ichat icon on your Dock or go to the Applications folder to open Ichat. You will be prompted to set up your account the first time you activate the software. Select your settings and configurations by following the setup instructions. You can create a free account by clicking on "Get an Ichat Account" if you don't already have an account.
Wait for the Buddy List to appear after you have successfully logged in.The Buddy List shows a list of the friends that you have added to your Ichat account. The status icon next to each name will indicate when your friends are online and available for chatting.
View or change your own status using the account settings at the top of the Ichat window. To change your status you can click on your current status and then choose a new one from the menu. If you want to create your own status message, you can click on "Custom" and then type in a customized status message. The people on your Buddy List will see your status the same way that you can see theirs.
Adding Your Buddies.
Go to "Buddies" followed by "Add Buddy" to add people to your Buddy List.
Search the Ichat address book to find people by entering their account name. You can also try to find people by typing their first and last name but it is better to search by account name since that is more specific.
Add the people you want to chat to by clicking "Add" in the search results. You will see the new buddy in your Buddy List. If the status of your new buddy is online you can try to send a message to him. The name of your new buddy will be dimmed if he is offline.
Double-click on a name from your Buddy List. The chat window will appear.
Type your text message in the box at the bottom.
Hit the Enter key on your keyboard to send the text message.
Wait for your friend to reply to your message. From here on you can repeat this process to continue chatting with your friend via text.
Connect your external microphone or make sure your computer's built-in microphone is on.
Make sure your microphone is enabled by going to the Video menu. There should be a tick next to "Microphone Enabled."
Click on the phone button next to the person in your Buddy List that you want to audio chat with. This will send your request to initiate the voice conversation.
Wait for your friend to accept the request and connect to your call.Once the call has connected, you will be able to talk to and hear the person on the other end.
Follow the steps for voice chat with a few minor changes.Instead of a microphone, you will need to connect and activate your webcam.
Click on the camera icon on your Buddy List.Once the chat has started you and the person that you're chatting to will be able to see each other via live video broadcasts.
