Alexander Wang Showed Cool Shirting & Athleisure for Spring 2019 Runway Show
Alexander Wang had a unique showing for New York Fashion Week this season, as the clothes that walked down the runway were actually pieces of four different collections. He showed his womenswear and menswear spring 2019 collections, some pieces from his resort 2019 line (which are set to become available at come November), and, most notably, the debut of the designer’s Adidas Originals collection of 84 pieces, which he has been working on for the past year.
In his collection, he married his aesthetic with what he knew of Adidas. “I looked at what’s theirs, what they own, and I flipped it, literally and aesthetically.” The flipping he is referring to was his manipulation of the brand’s iconic logo.
Throughout the showing he continued designing with deconstruction in classic shapes, most of which were unisex much to his classic design aesthetic. It is a look we have seen in his shows season after season, yet somehow the effect is fresh and new in its own way each time. This season it would have been difficult to make it not so, since there were so many aspects to his work this time around, yet we can still appreciate the sensation.
Wang played around with tailoring classic suiting fabrics as well as black lace, and he also played around with pairing specific pieces together (like bathrobe-esqueouterwear with board shorts, in one instance). It was through these directional decisions that Wang was more successful in his interpretation of deconstructed sexy fashion.
In fact, backstage he referred to his show as “50 Shades of Grey meets Lords of Dogtown.” In other words, the Alexander Wang spring/summer 2019 collection is still very much grounded in sex appeal, but this time around it was presented in a way that seemed to be second nature to Wang.
He pulled from his California roots to create looks that weren’t totally literal, but that stemmed from the sensibilities of being for a beach babe with a twist. Although, looking back at the black sheer pieces in the line is especially amusing now, following the trending controversy about Madonna (who showed up nearly late in the front row!) and her sheer dress nipple slip!
The Alexander Wang spring 2019 collection is cool. It’s that simple. He took common silhouettes and created them using unexpected materials, and in some cases that concept was flipped. He knows how to design for the younger crowd, especially in an era of fashion where anything goes.
There are no set rules or boundaries with today’s fashion, although some might wish there were, making it easy for designers with so many different, unique design aesthetics to give their perspectives a voice and still have a market to sell their work to.
And it is through that idea that Wang is able to let himself go and collaborate with sporty brands like Adidas for collections created with different design principles; the clothes will probably fly right off the racks when they hit stores.
The garments from that area of the collection were even sold at a few points during the day before the show walked the runway in pop up trucks around the city! We just can’t wait until it becomes available on a less temporary basis in a storefront and online.
