By far, the most popular song we play in our programs is "Que Sera,Sera.” It is a song first sung by Doris Day in the 1956 Alfred Hitchcock film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much" with music by Jay Livingston and lyrics by Ray Evans. It was an extremely popular song in its day and reached number 2 on the Billboard Top 100. It has a 60 bar per minute waltz timing, which gives it a seductively ideal tempo and rhythm for just about anyone to sway back and forth. It is also a very popular Viennese Waltz that Ballroom dancers love to dance to. Try putting that song on and NOT moving a part of your body.
We probably play this song every single time we do a session. We usually save it until the end of the session because people not only love to dance to it, they also love to sing the lyrics as well. Quite often we can get the entire group to hold hands while singing "Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be".
These lyrics that the now 91 year old Doris Day made famous are of dubious origin. "Que Sera Sera" is not actually grammatically correct in any of the three languages that people assume it came from. In Italian, the literal translation would be "Quelle che sara', sara', Spanish would be "Lo que sera', sera' and French "Ce que sera, sera", but it became household saying everyone has adopted it as their own. It's one of those phrases where the meaning outweighs it's historical origins. That is certainly the case when we are all hand- in hand, people with Alzheimer's and their caregivers as we bring each Tea Dance to a close. We sing out loud, the acceptance of things we cannot control "whatever will be, will be", we hold hands and celebrate the moment, because as the song tells us "the future is not ours to see". And since we cannot control that future, we sing louder and dance with more vigor with each chorus because having these wonderfully powerful moments is what keeps us going.
