The Great Exercise Debate
The article, Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin, has caused quite a stir in the health and fitness community. We've engaged in some lively discussions over here at the WD offices about each of our varying opinions. Amy weighed in the other week on her blog, and Barbara also touched on the study in a recent article she wrote for womansday.com. Not to be left out, I wanted to give my own views on what I, personally, know for sure about breaking a sweat.
Boosts my mood like nothing else. A good jog or brisk walk is my favorite form of therapy. I always, without a doubt, feel better after some physical activity.
Makes me want to eat healthier. One of the main arguments in the article was that the more you exercise, the more you eat. The author gave an example of a woman who would exercise intensely and then go eat muffins from Starbucks. I don't know about you, but the LAST thing I would want post-workout is a heavy muffin. I crave healthy and delicious foods like fruits, veggies, and whole grains because I know my body needs the nutrients. Exercising in the morning puts me on the right track and I tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day.
Helps me look better. No, I'm not talking about what it does to my body shape…I'm just talking about my complexion and skin. When I am exercising a few times a week, my cheeks are rosier and my skin seems to be glowing a bit more overall (not just when its covered in sweat), probably due to the blood rush.
Okay, I could go on and on, but you get the gist. Regardless of the role exercise plays in weight loss, for me, there's no question that it will remain a regular part of my life.
